JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

A IT Electronics Communications Supervisor plans, schedules, and supervises the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic systems and equipment throughout the District.

Typical duties include:

  • Supervising the assembly, replacement, installation, repair, modification, and maintenance of a variety of digital and analog electronic communication and telecommunication systems and equipment.
  • Writing specifications for equipment used in electronics courses and for tests on instructional equipment.
  • Supervising and participating in the preparation of specifications for electronics maintenance materials, contracted electronics work, and force account job planning packages.
  • Supervising and participating in the preparation of reports, time sheets, requisitions, and related documents.
  • Conferring with representatives of units or departments regarding the need for electronic equipment.
  • Preparing specifications for electronic equipment to be purchased, and evaluates and supervises the inspection of contracted electronics work for compliance with specifications.
  • Supervising contractual procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable collective bargaining agreements.
  • Preparing correspondence, reports, instructions, and descriptions of tasks and related documents.
  • Identifying and evaluating equipment, supplies, techniques, and systems.
  • Ensuring compliance with District procurement procedures.
  • Coordinating resolution of construction project issues in accordance with District policy and applicable laws and regulations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

PROMOTIONAL STATUS IS REQUIRED

You must be a current or retired employee of LAUSD with 130 paid days in regular status in the Classified Service or permanent status in the Certificated Service or have been laid-off within the past 39 months from a regular, permanent LAUSD position in which you passed probation. Laid-off employees' eligibility as a promotional candidate expires at the end of their 39 month period; as such, laid-off employees applying for promotional career opportunities may not be eligible to complete the assessment process or may be removed from the employment eligibility list once their eligibility as a promotional candidate expires.

 

EDUCATION:

Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency, preferably supplemented by courses in analog and digital circuitry and in the detection and repair of electronics equipment malfunctions.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Six years of journey-level or higher experience in repair, maintenance, and installation of electronic systems such as local area network cable plants, television distribution systems, closed-circuit television (CCTV), intrusion alarm systems, or public address systems/ inter-electronics systems and/or the installation and support of PBX and VoIP systems. Two years of the required experience must have included experience in at least two of the following areas: leading or planning projects, preparing cost estimates or project budgets, and providing work direction over lower-level staff.

 

An Associate Degree in electronics technology or related field, or completion of a recognized electronics apprenticeship program may be substituted for two years of the required journey-level experience. A Bachelor’s Degree in electronics technology or related field may be substituted for up to four years of the required journey-level experience.

 

SPECIAL:

A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and the use of a motor vehicle.

A BICSI certification(s), ICET certification(s), or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) is preferable.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal IT Electronics Communications Supervisor is an experienced professional with a strong, comprehensive background in a wide range of electronic systems. They will ideally possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in electronics technology and a BICSI, ICET or CCNA certification.

 

The candidate will demonstrate strong project‑management skills, including the ability to manage complex project timelines and budgets while producing reliable project estimates. They can work effectively under the pressure of multiple projects and short deadlines and demonstrate strong conflict‑resolution skills and sound judgment in challenging situations. They will also have experience supervising personnel and providing clear work direction to ensure team effectiveness and project completion.

 

Additionally, the candidate can collaborate effectively with stakeholders and convey clear and concise technical information. The candidate maintains a steadfast safety‑first mindset, upholding protocols that protect students, staff, and the broader school community.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score. Hiring departments may make job offers to candidates on the top three ranks of the hiring list. Eligibility typically lasts for 12 months. The hiring list resulting from this assessment process may be used to fill open positions in related job classifications.
