DEPARTMENT OR SCHOOL SITE
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) is dedicated to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for students to learn, teachers to teach, and employees to work. This mission is supported through periodic inspections of schools and District facilities, assessment of environmental impacts at or around our schools, and by meeting or exceeding health, safety and environmental requirements and guidance.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
An Assistant Environmental Safety Officer assists with basic implementation of the safety and industrial hygiene and/or environmental compliance programs.
Typical duties for this position include:
- Assisting with the preparation of updates to OEHS programs, policies, procedures, safety alerts, and other OEHS-related content; reviewing and making recommendations.
- Assisting with the preparation and delivery of environmental health and safety training materials.
- Assisting operating departments in determining whether equipment being used conforms to State safety requirements.
- Assisting with the preparation for construction meetings and construction audits to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Participating in various meetings with District departments such as the Maintenance and Operations area meetings.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Graduation from a recognized college or university preferably with a major in environmental and occupational health, public health, industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, urban planning, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, industrial engineering, environmental engineering, or a related field. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis provided that the requirement of a high school diploma or equivalent is met.
EXPERIENCE:
One year of experience performing environmental health and safety investigation, audits, and analysis.
Experience in accident prevention or environmental compliance, including preparing recommendations for compliance with regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety, traffic safety, fire prevention, air and water compliance or solid and hazardous waste control is preferable.
SPECIAL:
A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation.
SPECIAL NOTES:
- May require wearing a negative pressure respirator.
- Use of respirator may be subject to medical clearance which meets pertinent provisions of the General Industry Safety Orders of the California Code of Regulations regarding protective equipment when exposed to hazardous materials including, but not limited to, asbestos or lead.
- Employees in the class of Assistant Environmental Safety Officer are subject to call at any hour.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for this position will possess:
- Strong professional and technical environmental health and safety experience
- Solid environmental health and safety academic knowledge
- Knowledge of General Industry Safety Orders and other applicable safety, environmental health, and compliance regulations of government agencies
- Strong communications skills to effectively and clearly communicate in oral and written communications the appropriate health and safety information, technical concepts and procedures to both technical and non-technical personnel
- Strong ability to research environmental health and safety information and prepare/deliver safety training information and materials
- Strong ability to conduct research to develop and draft environmental health & safety policies, procedures, alerts, advisories, etc.
- Personal effectiveness to follow through and complete assignments and meet deadlines; and the self-management ability to prioritize tasks, work assignments and adjust to changing priorities, especially in emergency situations
- Experience building ongoing relationships with staff in the assigned caseload and possess the willingness to go above and beyond to provide service to the client
- Ability to travel regularly to assigned District regional areas to conduct safety trainings, consultations and respond to health and safety issues and emergencies.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score. Hiring departments may make job offers to candidates on the top three ranks of the hiring list. Eligibility typically lasts for 12 months.
