JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

A Welder performs journey-level welding, cutting, and brazing using electric, heliarc, and oxyacetylene welding equipment in the shop and field.

 

Some of the primary job duties performed will require that a job incumbent:

  • Fuses metal parts together for the repair and maintenance of equipment such as steel furniture, machinery, tanks, pipe tubing, castings, and motor vehicle body fixtures requiring the use of either electric, heliarc, or oxyacetylene equipment.
  • Lays out fence lines and installs metal fence posts, handrails, fence fabric, gates, and related parts.
  • Fabricates metal structures such as grilles, grates, catwalks, steel stairs, playground equipment, gates, and boiler stacks from structural shapes and plates.
  • Performs journey-level repairs and/or modifications to structural metal components of school buildings and structures.
  • Adjusts power unit controls for correct voltage and current delivery as determined by the type of metal to be welded.
  • Sets up electric, inert gas shielded arc, or oxyacetylene welding equipment for operation.
  • Connects and adjusts hoses, regulators, and tips for gas welding and cutting.
  • Attends respiratory protection meetings, including annual respirator fit-testing.
  • May assist in preparing material lists, estimating job costs, preparing job records, and performing surveys.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.

 

Experience: Successful completion of a recognized welding apprenticeship program or five years of welding experience in the building trades, of which one year must have been at the journey-level.

 

Certification: A City of Los Angeles Welder certification for structural steel  or a Welding certification or qualification issued for a nationally-recognized standard or code in the minimum category of limited thickness 3G or 4G, vertical-weld progression uphill.

 

Special:  A valid California Driver License and use of an automobile.

 

Special Physical Requirement:

  • Manual dexterity and strength to use tools of the trade
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, climb, reach overhead, crouch, kneel, balance, push, pull, and safely lift up to 100 pounds of equipment and material.
  • Ability to do physical work under conditions involving temperature extremes
  • Ability to work safely in confined spaces
  • Vision sufficient to view work and weld with precision
  • Normal sense of smell to detect potentially hazardous conditions, such as gas leaks
  • Ability to work safely at heights, including use of ladders, scaffolding, and other related equipment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the knowledge of:  

  • Standard practices, materials, and processes of the welding trade
  • Types and uses of electric, heliarc, and oxyacetylene welding equipment
  • Heating and welding characteristics of various metals and of the fluxes and materials used in welding
  • Safety regulations and practices in the use and storage of welding equipment and materials
  • Microsoft Word and Outlook

 

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the ability to:

  • Perform welding in accordance with established weld procedure specifications
  • Fabricate and weld various types of joints from all positions, using either electric, heliarc, or oxyacetylene equipment
  • Set up and adjust welding equipment
  • Maintain welding equipment in safe working condition
  • Perform work while wearing protective equipment including respirators and protective clothing
  • Operate a computer and associated peripheral equipment
