The Los Angeles Unified School District seeks an outstanding Principal to lead the students, staff, and community at Washington Irving Middle School-Math, Music, and Engineering Magnet towards academic excellence.
Founded in 1937, Washington Irving Middle School is an inclusive STEAM magnet that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across the arts and sciences. The school provides a rigorous and relevant Common Core-aligned STEAM curriculum that fosters critical thinking and creativity. Through self-directed inquiry, students engage in a collaborative, relationship-based learning environment where design thinking, technology integration, and project-based learning connect the arts and sciences in an interdisciplinary and innovative educational model.
Washington Irving Middle School serves approximately 915 students in grades 6-8. The school population is approximately 63% Latino, 23% White, 5% two or more races, 3% African American/Black, 3% Filipino, 2% Asian, and 1% American Indian. Sixty-four percent qualify for free/reduced lunch; 33% identified Gifted and Talented; 17% Students with Disabilities; 72% English Only, 21% Reclassified Fluent English Proficient (RFEP), 4% English Learners, and 3% Initial Fluent English Proficient (IFEP). Irving Middle School is located at 3010 Estara Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90065.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
will be an innovative and compassionate leader with a commitment to serving the Washington Irving Middle School Community; have a strong background in secondary instruction coupled with knowledge of tiered intervention; have strong knowledge of the LAUSD Strategic Plan, the California Common Core State Standards, the LAUSD Teaching and Learning Framework, and the LAUSD School Leadership Framework; have experience in planning, designing, and facilitating differentiated professional development; work collaboratively with all educational partners; interpret data to inform decisions and develop PDSA Cycles that will result in continuous improvement; supervise and build capacity among certificated and classified staff to support the instructional program; foster relationships and nurture the development of a positive school culture and climate; have experience with supporting Magnet programs; conduct classroom observations and provide actionable feedback for improved performance; have knowledge of State, Federal, and LAUSD policies, procedures, and regulations; have excellent oral/written communication skills; have knowledge and experience working with school budgets, school operations, and instructional technology platforms; demonstrate respect, courtesy, and professionalism in all interactions; have excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task while meeting commitments and deadlines.
SALARY:
Salary: MST 44G - E Basis ($137,393 - $171,333) – 234 paid days
- For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
- For an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
- Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING):
- Eight years of successful full-time public school certificated service
- Three years of experience as a teacher in a K-12 public school program
- Two years of experience at a middle or senior high school
- Two years of service in an administrative or supervisory position utilizing an administrative credential, such as assistant principal or equivalent position
Employees who have been issued a below-standard Performance Evaluation, or Notice of Unsatisfactory Act(s) and/or Suspension, shall be ineligible for application to any promotion process for one calendar year following the issuance of such a Notice.

- A valid California teaching credential requiring a Bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching
- A valid California Administrative Services Credential • Multicultural coursework*
- Master’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university • District Master Plan requirements*

For all school based administrative positions, candidates must be in the appropriate LAUSD eligible pool for the position or currently serving in the class for which they are applying. In order to be placed in the eligible pool, candidates must successfully complete the appropriate LAUSD Aspiring Administrator Program. Qualified applicants not in an eligible pool from within or outside LAUSD may be considered if fewer than five applicants from the eligible pool apply for the position.
