PROJECT
A Vocation and Transition Assistant provides support to secondary and post-secondary school students with disabilities in vocational employment and transitional activities, and monitors progress at work sites to ensure that students acquire vocational, social, and independent living skills.
DEPARTMENT OR SCHOOL SITE
LAUSD’s Division of Special Education - District Office of Transition Services (DOTS) is currently seeking a well-qualified candidate to fill the Vocation and Transition Assistant vacancy within the District.
The Vocation and Transition Assistant provides a variety of career and vocational opportunities to secondary and post-secondary school students or adults with disabilities. They work with students at on-the-job training sites, under the direction of a certificated administrator, to assist them in learning vocational, social, and independent living skills. The Vocation and Transition Assistant performs a broad range of activities designed to assist students with disabilities to gain job skills, and employment opportunities. They partner with local employers within the communities throughout Los Angeles County to provide work experience opportunities for students.
The candidate for this position must be willing to work in the field and travel throughout the assigned District area(s) to meet with potential employers in private industry and the public sector and observe students participating in work-based learning opportunities in the community or job site. The goal for students who participate in the work-based learning program is to gain valuable work experience and secure an internship or direct employment at one of the many local businesses that partner with the District through this program. Students have the option of participating in this program on volunteer status or paid status.
A Vocation and Transition Assistant will work under the general supervision of a certificated administrator. This position does not exercise supervision over District employees, but work direction may be exercised over student workers. The candidate hired to fill our Vocation and Transition Assistant vacancy will work on a traditional school-year (9 month calendar schedule).

BENEFITS

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Typical Duties
- Provides individual and group work-readiness skills training to students in areas including resume development, interview skills, networking, employer expectations, independent living skills, positive work attitudes, developing initiative, motivation, and responsibility under the direction of certificated staff.
- Provides training and job coaching as needed in community-based work environments by assisting employers with the orientation of students to work methods, specific assignments, work rules, and providing scaffolding in preparation for fading supports.
- Works with students and employers to identify student strengths and needs as related to vocational skills, job accommodations, and solutions to employment barriers.
- Initiates discussions with students regarding post-secondary career, educational and independent living options and goals, and may assist with linkages to community agencies and resources.
- Places students in appropriate work environments and accompanies students to job sites or transition activities.
- Assists students with becoming aware of personal appearance and developing personal care self-sufficiency.
- Collects data on student progress and performance in accordance with the Individualized Transition Plan goals and activities, and reports findings to teachers and parents.
- Maintains records of hours and funds expended for work-based learning programs. Assists with completing work applications for students. Observes and documents student behavior in the community or job site, and reinforces acceptable behavior.
- May schedule and visit various employers to identify potential positions for students, survey employment needs and outlook, educate on employer incentives designed to help students with disabilities, and promote the District’s work based learning programs.
- May attend Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, as requested.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency, and completion of 9 semester units or 12 quarter units from a recognized college or university in courses such as sociology, psychology, special education, or a related field. An additional year of experience may substitute the 9 semester units or 12 quarter units.
EXPERIENCE
Two years of paid experience in an educational setting performing either transitional guidance, vocational guidance, or reinforcing instruction as a paraprofessional. It is preferred that the aforementioned experience includes working with students with special needs.
SPECIAL
A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and the use of a motor vehicle may be required for some positions.
SPECIAL NOTES
- A First-Aid Certificate issued by a recognized First Aid training program must be obtained within 60 days after appointment and must be kept valid during the term of employment.
- A CPR Certificate issued by a recognized CPR training program must be obtained within 60 days after appointment and kept valid during the term of employment.
- Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English may be required for some positions.

They have exceptional attention to detail, can maintain accurate records and ensure data integrity in all documentation and reporting. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with students and youth to provide work-readiness skills, training, and job coaching. They will also encourage students’ success and be committed to working with students to help them find employment, by connecting them with opportunities that match their skills and interest. The ideal candidate will also ensure confidentiality while working with sensitive student information and be responsive to the needs of the students with a wide range of disabilities.
The ideal candidate will have experience utilizing effective outreach techniques to establish and maintain positive, professional and collaborative working relationships with employees, students, school staff, agency partners and local employers. They have experience with job sourcing, recruiting, job placement, and ‘job fit’. They can also effectively match students with disabilities to work-based learning opportunities based on aptitude, level of learning development, life skills, and interest. Additionally, they have a record of successfully soliciting employer interest and will be committed to advancing the goals of students with disabilities.
The ideal candidate will understand and forecast the benefits of a work-based learning experience at the program and student level. They demonstrate the ability to manage their time and work schedule efficiently and can work independently with minimal direction. They will actively and consistently work towards meeting Division and program goals, continuously track and report progress, and are highly responsive to program staff. The ideal candidate will also possess exceptional interpersonal communication skills, verbally and in writing and can effectively communicate the economic incentives and benefits of providing work-based learning opportunities to students with disabilities
In addition to the above, the ideal candidate will have knowledge in the following areas:
- Applicable District, City, State, Federal laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to child labor, Social Security, training, placement of the disabled, nondiscrimination, safety, and other employment matters
- Language, grammar and writing skills necessary to prepare professional correspondence
- Educational programs and career opportunities available to secondary, continuation, and adult school students
- Physical and emotional needs of children at various age levels
- Trends in local employment
- Performance evaluation and Interviewing techniques
- Microsoft Office, Word, and Outlook
The ideal candidate will also have the ability to:
- Operate a computer (including word processing, spreadsheet and database software programs), fax machine, scanner, copier, printer and specialized equipment intended to assist with the instructional needs of students
- Interpret, apply and explain rules and regulations governing student employment and vocational job placement
- Assist students in a variety of moderately active work environments
- Act calmly and appropriately in emergencies
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions accurately

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process.
