JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
A Transportation Inspector investigates complaints from the public and District employees pertaining to the operations, personnel activities, and services of the Transportation Services Division. Additional Duties include:
- Conducting confidential investigations of complaints pertaining to Transportation Services Division personnel or services to determine adherence to pertinent laws, rules, regulations, and District and Division policies and procedures.
- Writing detailed reports of assigned investigations.
- Reviewing daily bus reports to ensure operational efficiency and proper utilization of vehicles and personnel.
- Investigating and writing reports of accidents involving District vehicles, obtaining related police reports, and assisting in securing witnesses for the District.
- Conferring with District administrators, contractors, representatives of public agencies, and the public regarding transportation activities, problems, and complaints.
- Collecting information by interviewing witnesses, researching data, and securing facts for matters such as suspected child abuse, alleged Transportation Services Division employee misconduct, or employees suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Advising on appropriate action pertaining to investigations or changes in Transportation Services Division policies and procedures.
- Liaising among the Transportation Services Division, Office of the Inspector General, Staff Relations, other District departments, and law enforcement agencies regarding investigative matters as needed.
- Representing the District in proceedings relating to District vehicles or personnel cited for traffic violations and coordinating the repair of cited vehicles with the Fleet Maintenance Section and the California Highway Patrol.
- Recommending the establishment of new school bus stops for safety reasons.
- Participating in parent conferences.
- Performing related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
PROMOTIONAL STATUS IS REQUIRED
You must be a current or retired employee of LAUSD with 130 paid days in regular status in the Classified Service or permanent status in the Certificated Service or have been laid-off within the past 39 months from a regular, permanent LAUSD position in which you passed probation. Laid-off employees' eligibility as a promotional candidate expires at the end of their 39 month period; as such, laid-off employees applying for promotional career opportunities may not be eligible to complete the assessment process or may be removed from the employment eligibility list once their eligibility as a promotional candidate expires.
Education:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency supplemented by 12 semester units or equivalent quarter units of college-level courses related to business writing, investigative techniques, data analysis, or other related subjects.
Experience:
Three years of experience directly related to the field of bus or truck transportation. Two years of experience directly related to the transportation of students within LAUSD is preferable. Any type of investigation experience is preferable.
Special:
A valid California Driver License.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for the Transportation Inspector position will be highly detail-oriented and possess a thorough knowledge of investigative procedures and techniques. They should be well-versed in relevant state and federal regulations, as well as LAUSD policies, that govern the safe transportation of students throughout the Los Angeles Metropolitan area. Proficiency in using software systems such as Word, Excel, Access, GPS, Bus Ops, and Welligent for investigative research and reporting is essential.
In addition, the ideal candidate will have strong self-management skills to handle a diverse caseload accurately and within designated timelines. They should be adept at managing conflicts that may arise during investigations and demonstrate a high level of integrity in handling sensitive and confidential matters. Strong collaboration skills are also essential, as the role requires close interaction with District administrators, public agency representatives, and law enforcement.
The ideal candidate will further demonstrate a keen analytical ability to identify patterns and trends in data, informing investigative outcomes and recommendations. Exceptional written and oral communication skills are also necessary for delivering clear reports and status updates to all relevant stakeholders.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score.
