JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
A Tile Layer performs journey-level ceramic and clay tile, marble, and refractory ceramic material installation and repair work in connection with the maintenance and alteration of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
The core duties below will require that a job incumbent:
- Repairs tile and marble flooring, walls, walks, drains, fountains, swimming pool areas, and components of gas and electric kilns.
- Installs tile and marble according to specified designs and shapes.
- Cuts and polishes hard tile and marble.
- Patches plaster and cement work in connection with tile and marble jobs.
- Mixes mortar used for setting tile and marble.
- Cleans tile and marble surfaces.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.

Experience: Completion of a recognized tile layer apprenticeship program, or five years of experience in the tile laying trade, of which one year must have been at the journey level.
Special: A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle.
Special Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend at the waist, crawl, reach overhead, crouch, kneel, and maintain balance
- Ability to safely lift, push, pull, and carry up to 100 pounds of materials
- Ability to work safely at heights including the use of ladders, scaffolds, and other related equipment
- Dexterity of fingers and hands to operate the necessary tools and equipment
- Visual acuity to differentiate between color tones, patterns, and materials used in a tile shop
- Stamina and agility to perform strenuous manual labor
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of:
- Techniques and equipment used in laying tile such as trawls, tile nippers, wet saws and grinders
- Building codes and regulations covering marble and tile work
- Kinds of ceramic and clay tile and marble and their adaptabilities and uses
Further, the ideal candidate will also possess the ability to effectively:
- Work from sketches, drawings, blueprints, and oral or written instructions

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score. Hiring departments may make job offers to candidates on the top three ranks of the hiring list. Eligibility typically lasts for 12 months. The hiring list resulting from this assessment process may be used to fill open positions in related job classifications.
