The Access Compliance Unit has technical knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Access Compliance. ACU provides support and technical expertise to all phases of the construction lifecycle via coordination with various Facilities departments, such as Planning, Design and Construction, as we upgrade our school facilities with Repair and Modernization projects. ACU also manages the Rapid Access Program (RAP) which supports school generated requests from the Division of Special Education for student accessibility requiring minor ADA improvements, and provides support to General Counsel's Office of Civil Rights requests.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
A Supervising Access Compliance Specialist supervises and participates in the District’s Access Compliance activities, and provides technical Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) code compliance quality assurance/quality control and oversight during the design and construction phases on multiple new and existing facilities projects.
Typical duties include:
- Supervising and coordinating the work of Facilities Access Compliance Specialists and other technical Access Compliance Unit personnel inclusive of providing field observation progress reports of electronic accessibility surveys, performance evaluations, guidance, and Access Compliance Unit (ACU) team resource assessments.
- Reviewing the accessibility surveying teams’ field survey work product for consistency, accuracy and efficiency.
- Reporting deviations from electronic surveying protocols and coordinates issue resolution.
- Providing technical advice and support to construction project management staff and District staff on accessibility code matters for compliance with Title 24 of the California Building Code (CBC) of Regulations, Federal, State, District and departmental standards, and related DSA procedures and protocols.
- Reviewing and finalizing ADA transition plan reports.
- Reviewing cited architectural barriers, photographs, job files, and any written correspondence for compliance with applicable Federal, state, municipal, and District policies, procedures, and requirements.
- Interfacing with District staff on matters relating to the accessibility inspection of the District’s existing facilities and construction projects, and matters relating to accessibility requirements of District construction projects, barrier removals, and ADA program accessibility.
- Coordinating administrative action pertaining to access compliance segments of project completion and closeout.
- Performing review of documents including construction documents for conformance to applicable accessibility codes/standards, requests for rapid access program accessibility, requests for accommodations for students or community members with disabilities, transition plan accessibility surveys, architectural barrier lists, non-conforming items lists, punch lists, mileage statements, and time reports for accuracy.
- Reviewing plans, job estimates, job start documents, and creating estimates for access compliance services.
- Coordinating responses to legal issues and requests for information.
- Collaborating with architects and engineers on access compliance issues impacting multiple projects.
- Training and evaluating subordinates, assigning projects or tasks, and following up to ensure completed staff work.
- Addressing inquiries regarding status of accessibility issues on maintenance or construction projects.
- Resolving issues related to service charges and corresponding funding sources.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Requirements:
PROMOTIONAL STATUS IS REQUIRED. You must be a current or retired employee of LAUSD with 130 paid days in regular status in the Classified Service or permanent status in the Certificated Service or have been laid-off within the past 39 months from a regular, permanent LAUSD position in which you passed probation. Laid-offemployees' eligibility as a promotional candidate expires at the end of their 39 month period; as such, laid-offemployees applying for promotional career opportunities may not be eligible to complete the assessment process or may be removed from the employment eligibility list once their eligibility as a promotional candidate expires.
Education:
Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree. A degree in architecture, engineering, construction management or a closely related field is preferable. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis. A valid certification as a Certified Access Specialist (CASp) by the Division of the State Architect is highly preferable.
Experience:
Four years of combined experience in providing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance or access compliance support in the construction of multiple public or educational facilities and public works projects which includes application of State and federal accessibility laws, codes, and regulations; surveying existing conditions for compliance; recommending corrective actions or acceptance based on best case solutions, or working with administrators on accessibility requests and providing accommodation solutions. Experience in a lead or supervisory capacity is preferred.
Special:
- A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and the use of a motor vehicle, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation.
The following certifications are preferred:
- Certification as a Class 1, 2, or 3 Project Inspector credentialed by DSA Certification(s) as a special inspector as identified in Title 24, Part I, California Code of Regulations (C.C.R.)
- Certification as an Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner credentialed by the International Code Council (ICC).
- Certification as a Certified Access Specialist (CASp) by the Division of the State Architect.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking highly qualified professionals with extensive experience in accessibility compliance, architectural design, and construction administration, specifically as it applies to educational facilities.
Ideal candidates will possess in-depth knowledge of applicable accessibility codes and regulations, including Chapter 11B of the 2022 California Building Code (Title 24) and the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (ADAS). Candidates must also have a working knowledge of other building code provisions that govern the design and construction of school facilities as outlined in Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations.
This position requires a strong working knowledge of building systems, construction methods and materials, and the design process from schematic development through construction completion. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to interpret code requirements, identify and resolve accessibility issues in both new and existing school facilities, and ensure that accessibility is fully integrated into project design and construction.

Candidates with prior experience working on K–12 school projects, particularly within the framework of public school facility planning, modernization, new construction, or possess a current California Architect license are especially encouraged to apply.
