The LA Unified Student Empowerment Unit is seeking an experienced and dynamic professional who is passionate about student leadership and empowerment to join our team and drive initiatives that support students in becoming influential leaders, who are college-ready and active participants in their educational journey. As a Student, Family, and Community Liaison, you will develop and implement programs and activities that promote student leadership, peer-to-peer mentoring, project-based learning, and social-emotional development. You will collaborate with LAUSD staff, parents, and community partners to create opportunities that inspire and support students.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

A Student, Family, and Community Engagement Liaison assists with establishing, modifying, and implementing effective procedures and best practices for student, family, or community initiatives.

 

Typical duties for this position include:

  • Assisting school sites, regions, and central offices with the review and establishment of effective plans for student empowerment, family engagement, or related programs by providing guidance, trainings, and recommendations for improvement.
  • Planning and coordinating the logistics of various conferences, professional development opportunities and events, meetings, and advisory councils/committees.
  • Providing guidance and assistance to administrators and staff regarding the formation and implementation of advisory councils.
  • Creating and revising training materials, toolkits, guidelines, handbooks, resource/facilitator guides, agendas, scripts, surveys, and related documents or materials.
  • Reviewing information from surveys to determine student and family priorities, concerns, and/or questions and makes recommendations.
  • Liaising with District administrators and staff to respond to family inquiries and concerns.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with local organizations, groups, and coalitions to obtain resources and support for student empowerment, family engagement, and other related student/family/community programs.
  • Using multiple communication and social media platforms to provide or seek information from District staff, students, families and/or the community.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree preferably in, education, leadership, psychology, sociology, or a closely related field. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis, provided that graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency is met.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Two years of experience developing and implementing training for a youth, family, or community program.

 

SPECIAL:

A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and the use of a motor vehicle.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for this position is highly effective at prioritizing and overseeing multiple projects while thriving under pressure. They have significant experience designing, implementing, and overseeing the logistics of various district-wide student empowerment programs and initiatives. They have expertise in developing and refining educational materials, curricula, and resources related to student leadership and empowerment, district policies, training materials, toolkits, guidelines, handbooks, and related materials. In addition, they have experience delivering professional development for teachers, school administrators, and other organization leaders. Moreover, the ideal candidate possesses exceptional oral and written communication skills and extensive experience using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Canva. Furthermore, the ideal candidate has a solid understanding of district rules, policies, organizations, and functions and an awareness of current events within the District. Finally, the ideal candidate is available to work evenings and weekends.

EMPLOYMENT SELECTION PROCESS

We anticipate receiving a number of well qualified applicants for this position; therefore, there will be a competitive process. To honor this request, we will be adhering to a pre-planned employment assessment schedule.

 

The assessment process for this position TENTATIVELY consists of a qualifying (pass/fail) Training and Experience (T&E) Evaluation followed by a Writing Project and/or Presentation Project and an Interview, which will be worth 100% of candidates' overall scores. Candidates who are successful on the T&E will be invited to participate in the Writing Project/Presentation Project.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score. Hiring departments may make job offers to candidates on the top three ranks of the hiring list. Eligibility typically lasts for 12 months.
