SPECIALIST, STUDENT SUPPORT PROGRAMS

38G (School Support Administrator, 0515)

 

The specialist serves as a staff administrator for the Student Support and Attendance Services Branch. This role is designed to support the Student Discipline and Expulsion Support (SDES) coordinator and assist the SDES coordinator with the supervision of SDES personnel. This includes oversight of expulsion hearings, admission hearings, and AB 922 post-expulsion services. This specialist will assist with the development, coordination, and implementation of student discipline policy and procedures.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides direct support to schools and regions regarding student discipline, other means of correction, and expulsion referrals
  • Develops and provides professional development to school-based administrators, regions, and central office personnel on formal student discipline
  • Assists counselors with fair hearing requirements and oversees state-mandated due process hearings, including expulsion, admission, revocation, and reinstatement hearings
  • Assigns expulsion cases to subordinate SDES staff and monitors statutory timelines to ensure District compliance
  • Ensures reinstatement reviews are conducted for all expelled students who have met eligibility criteria; and under the delegation of authority, recommends reinstatement on behalf of the Board; and ensures students have an appropriate educational program after reinstatement
  • Assists with preparation and submission of findings of fact reports and recommendations to the Board of Education based on evidence adduced at the hearings consistent with statutory requirements and timelines
  • Maintains comprehensive content knowledge pertaining to student discipline, assists with policy revisions and modifications, and facilitates the implementation of policy bulletins including student suspensions, expulsion of students, My Integrated Student Information System (MiSiS), opportunity transfers, mandated reporting of certain student behavior, and other related documents

CONTINUE PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with planning, organizing, and implementing the District-level expulsion analysis IEP reviews in collaboration with the Division of Special Education in reviewing procedural and substantive compliance of formal discipline of students with disabilities
  • Oversees counselors to ensure appropriate and timely educational placements for all expelled students and students undergoing expulsion and/or admission process to avoid loss of instructional time during disciplinary proceedings
  • Assists with the planning submission of Board reports and presentations at closed Board meetings with the Office of General Counsel and Office of the Board of Education
  • Supervises and directs the performance of assigned personnel
  • Assists the SDES coordinator with program development and evaluation and the development of internal and external coordination and alignment of communications with families with District initiatives and other partner messages and those sent by school personnel
  • Ensures that documentation and data collection are completed by all staff, including monitoring and implementation of quality assurance processes and protocols specific to program and service objectives and in alignment with the District’s multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) framework and funding mandates
  • Provides technical assistance and support for student and employee matters or critical incidents relating to crisis counseling and intervention services, threat assessment and management, workplace violence prevention, and suicide prevention
  • Performs other duties as assigned

SALARY:

38G, (School Support Administrator, 0515) – A Basis ($131,068 – $163,154) – 261 paid days

NOTE: This position will close on June 30, 2026.

  • In the case of an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
  • For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
  • Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority-based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.
  • This position is deemed certificated under Education Code Section 44065 but may not qualify for "creditable service" under Education Code Section 22119.5 for CalSTRS benefits. However, if the candidate chosen for the position is already a CalSTRS member, he/she can fill out an election form to remain in CalSTRS and thereby obtain CalSTRS credit for this service.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

•    Permanent certificated employee of the Los Angeles Unified School District

•    At least five (5) years of successful, full-time public-school service in a certificated position(s)

•    At least three (3) years of successful, full-time public-school service in a non-classroom position(s) with assigned responsibilities directly related topupil attendance services, student counseling, school social work, student discipline, student health and wellness, or educational options

•    A valid California Administrative Services Credential

•    A valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential OR a valid California Health Services Credential authorizing service as a psychiatric social worker

•    An earned master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard conferred by a regionally- accredited college or university

•    Completion of required Multicultural Education and Master Plan coursework*

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful experience implementing tiered, school-based or District-wide SSAS programs and services
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in utilizing student information systems (e.g., MyData, MiSiS, FOCUS) and other computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated knowledge of District policies and procedures, goals, objectives, organizational structure, and functions
  • Knowledge of public and private resources and child advocacy institutions working in coordination with the educational system and SSAS staff
  • Successful experience coordinating attendance improvement or dropout prevention and recovery programs
  • Experience with supervising and evaluating staff
  • Experience with planning and implementing differentiated professional development
  • Understanding the strengths and needs of underserved student populations, such as English learners, Standard English learners, students with disabilities, students identified as gifted and talented, socioeconomically-disadvantaged students, and students or various languages and cultures
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations and socioeconomic groups
