SPECIALIST, DIVISION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION (CHARTER)

38G (School Support Administrator, 0515)

 

Under the direction of the Division of Special Education administrator or their designee, the specialist will provide technical assistance to LAUSD SELPA charter schools to support the delivery of special education services in the least restrictive environment. The specialist will assist with IEP implementation, compliance, data use, and professional development to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides technical assistance to charter schools in the LAUSD SELPA regarding strategies, supports, and procedures to ensure students with disabilities receive instruction in the least restrictive environment
  • Provides technical assistance to charter schools on the processes for monitoring the delivery of Individualized Education Program (IEP) services to students, ensuring students are provided services at the frequency and duration required by the IEP, and holding staff accountable for the delivery and documentation of services
  • Monitors compliance requirements of performance data from charter schools and supports these schools in the implementation of the compliance requirements
  • Provides consultation on use of support strategies to assist classroom personnel in effectively working with students with disabilities including appropriate use of academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports for students with a variety of disabilities in successfully transitioning to new classroom settings or programs, including  general education or integrated campuses

CONTINUE - PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Gathers and analyzes data from multiple sources to collaboratively develop a plan to support charter school teams in improving academic, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes for students with disabilities
  • Supports the effective implementation of all programs related to students with disabilities attending charter schools
  • Consults with charter school site personnel on special education policies, procedures, assessments, and instructional strategies
  • Provides professional development to charter school staff on a variety of special education topics
  • Supports charter school staff in the use of the Welligent IEP system for use in developing IEPs, tracking services, and inputting and accessing special education data
  • Addresses parent questions or concerns
  • Performs other duties as assigned

SALARY:

38G, (School Support Administrator, 0515) – A Basis ($131,068 – $163,154) – 261 paid days

  • In the case of an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
  • For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
  • Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority-based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.
  • This position is deemed certificated under Education Code Section 44065, but may not qualify for "creditable service" under Education Code Section 22119.5 for CalSTRS benefits. However, if the candidate chosen for the position is already a CalSTRS member, he/she can fill out an election form to remain in CalSTRS and thereby obtain CalSTRS credit for this service.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least five (5) years of successful, full-time public school service in a certificated position(s), with no fewer than three (3) years in a position(s) working with students with disabilities in a certificated capacity
  • A valid California Administrative Services Credential
  • A valid California Special Education Teaching Credential requiring a bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, that included student teaching
  • An earned master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard conferred by a regionally-accredited college or university
  • Completion of required Multicultural Education and Master Plan coursework*

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commitment to ensuring equity and access for students with disabilities and their families
  • A keen interest in and experience implementing innovative programs and developing alternative learning environments
  • Knowledge and experience in state and federal special education legal requirements, District special education policies and procedures, and the substantial compliance requirements    
  • Classroom experience modifying and scaffolding instruction and curriculum and experience using data to design and implement instructional and behavioral plans for individual students and groups of students
  • Successful experience presenting to large and small groups and facilitating consensus development among individuals within a group
  • Experience using the Welligent Integrated System, in particular, the IEP, service tracking, and reports
  • Experience using Welligent, MiSiS, and other District data systems.
  • Ability to travel to sites throughout the District
