JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

A Special Education Resource Coordinator provides coordination, supervision, and support services to the Division of Special Education by assisting school administrators in the staffing and scheduling of special education paraprofessionals at school sites and determining training needs.

 

Typical duties include:

 

  • Assisting school administrators to coordinate the work of Supervising Special Education Assistants, Special Education Assistants, and Special Education Trainees with regards to scheduling and assignments related to classroom, playground, and cafeteria duties, the care of physical needs of students with disabilities, and basic nursing care procedures and protocols for students with disabilities
  • Coordinating with District Nursing Services to assign, train, and schedule Health Care Assistants as it relates to the special handling, care, or exercises prescribed by doctors, nurses, or therapists.
  • Working with Supervising Special Education Assistants at schools to provide mentorship and resources.
  • Conferring with school principals or designee to compile data related to special education paraprofessional positions and incumbents to assess staffing needs and make adjustments at school sites.
  • Maintaining and updating records of parent and staff contacts, including information regarding issues raised and solutions to problems.
  • Developing and conducting workshops and professional development related to special education paraprofessionals’ duties, responsibilities, and expectations at school sites.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

PROMOTIONAL STATUS IS REQUIRED

You must be a current or retired employee of LAUSD with 130 paid days in regular status in the Classified Service or permanent status in the Certificated Service or have been laid-off within the past 39 months from a regular, permanent LAUSD position in which you passed probation.

 

Laid-off employees' eligibility as a promotional candidate expires at the end of their 39 month period; as such, laid-off employees applying for promotional career opportunities man not be eligible to complete the assessment process or may be removed from the employment eligibility list once their eligibility as a promotional candidate expires.

 

EDUCATION

Two years of college, preferably supplemented by courses in child growth and development, sociology, psychology, health, education, or other courses directly related to the physical care or psychology of children with disabilities. Additional qualifying experience beyond that required may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis, provided that graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent education proficiency is met.

 

EXPERIENCE

Three years of experience working with students with disabilities in a classroom, development center, or school. One year of experience must have included scheduling and training of staff in the related field, preferably in a supervisory capacity.

 

SPECIAL

A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and the use of a motor vehicle.

 

SPECIAL NOTES

  1. A Los Angeles Unified School District Food Handler's Health Certificate must be maintained.
  2. A First-Aid Certificate issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross must be obtained within 60 days after appointment and must be kept valid during the term of employment.
  3. A CPR Certificate issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross must be obtained within 60 days after appointment and kept valid during the term of employment.
  4. A District Health Care Assistant Certificate is required at the time of appointment.
  5. Employees must successfully complete yearly Health Care Assistant training regarding changes and requirements.
  6. Travel to locations throughout the District is required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidates for Special Education Resource Coordinator will possess the following:

 

  • Knowledge of special education programs, services, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Individualized Education Program (IEP) process.
  • Knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Knowledge of the physical and emotional needs of children at various age levels. 
  • Knowledge of oral suctioning, gastronomy tube feeding, catheterization, tracheostomy suctioning, and ostomy care.
  • The ability to work cooperatively with District staff and parents.
  • The ability to deal calmly and effectively with emergencies, unusual actions, or nervous conditions of students.
  • The ability to interpret and explain laws, rules, and policies as they relate to Special Education.
  • The ability to operate a variety of medical equipment such as catheterization equipment, gastronomy feeding tubes, and oral suction machines.

EMPLOYMENT SELECTION PROCESS

The employment selection process for Special Education Resource Coordinator may consist of an online performance assessment, a training and experience questionnaire, a technical  project, and a technical interview.

 

TESTING PROCESS

 

  • You will be invited to take these assessments online and testing will be conducted remotely and all applications will be required to submit a Candidate Confidentiality Form prior to testing. Failure to submit these forms before the given deadline will result in the withdrawal of your application from the selection process.

  • Your test scores from these assessments will be banked and used for final calculation.

  • You must receive PASSING SCORES on all TEST MODULES, for all the assessments, to remain in the selection process.

  • Candidates who receive a failing score on any test module will NOT be eligible to move forward in the selection process.

  • The technical interview may be worth 100% of a candidate's overall score and will be used to rank order candidates on the resulting eligibility list. The technical project will be evaluated in conjunction with your interview.

  • If you are successful on all the assessments and meet the minimum education, experience, and special requirements, you will be added to the eligibility list provided you submit your official college/university transcripts or diploma and California Driver's License when requested during the recruitment process.
