The Los Angeles Unified School District seeks an outstanding Principal to lead the students, staff, and community at Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies towards academic excellence.

 

Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies offers all students an educational experience that promotes lifelong learning and college and career ready skills in an ever-changing world. Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies nurtures a diverse group of students from 4th grade through high school graduation. Per the CA Dashboard, SOCES serves grades 4th through 12th and is considered a SPAN Magnet school. A student could potentially spend nine years at SOCES and develop strong interpersonal relationships with students, staff, and teachers. SOCES fosters achievement for all with an enhanced curriculum that deepens the student's connection to a global society. Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies (SOCES) is located in Tarzana, California. SOCES is unique in that it is a magnet school that uses the LAUSD eChoices application process to enroll students from all over the Los Angeles County area. Many are from the San Fernando Valley and some students are from the San Gabriel Valley, the city of Los Angeles, and other parts of the county. Eighty-three percent (83%) of students qualify to take buses. The minority requirement is 60% and 40% White. We have a fleet of twenty-seven buses that offer transportation to our students who live more than two miles away. SOCES is located in the San Fernando Valley and a large number of SOCES students reside in the valley. The San Fernando Valley is approximately 25 miles from downtown Los Angeles and is home to a diverse population with ethnic representation from all over the world. The student ethnicity groups are: White - 605 students (36.27%), Hispanic - 598 students (35.85%), Asian - 183 students (10.97%), 2 or more - 98 students (5.88%), Filipino - 83 students (4.98%), African American/Black - 53 students (3.18%), Unknown - 44 students (2.68%), Pacific Islander - 3 students (.18%), (FOCUS Dashboard 2025).

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

will be an innovative individual with proven abilities to lead students, staff, and community toward academic success. The ideal candidate will have experience with a multidisciplinary approach applied throughout the curriculum, project-based learning, and the relevant magnet school theme and operations, which includes grades 4-12, Advanced Placement, AVID, Career Transition Education, STEM (science, technology, and math) instruction and programs that are rigorous, standards-based, inquiry-based, and real world problem-based about enriched subjects. The ideal candidate will be able to meet Federal, State, and District mandates, initiatives and guidelines; have experience with school budget development, school operations, and strategic planning; have effective time management skills and the ability to accomplish many tasks that meet commitments, deadlines, and quality standards; experience with teacher evaluation, growth, development, and coaching; be committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders, including building strong parent and community partnerships; and perform other duties related to the position.

SALARY:

MST 47G - E Basis ($143,466 - $178,942) – 234 paid days

  • For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.  
  • For an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
  • Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING):

  • Eight years of successful full-time public school certificated service
  • Three years of experience as a teacher in a K-12 public school program
  • Two years of experience at a middle or senior high school
  • Two years of service in an administrative or supervisory position utilizing an administrative credential, such as assistant principal or equivalent position

 

Employees who have been issued a below-standard Performance Evaluation, or Notice of Unsatisfactory Act(s) and/or Suspension, shall be ineligible for application to any promotion process for one calendar year following the issuance of such a Notice.

  • A valid California teaching credential requiring a Bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching

For all school based administrative positions, candidates must be in the appropriate LAUSD eligible pool for the position or currently serving in the class for which they are applying. In order to be placed in the eligible pool, candidates must successfully complete the appropriate LAUSD Aspiring Administrator Program.  Qualified applicants not in an eligible pool from within or outside LAUSD may be considered if fewer than five applicants from the eligible pool apply for the position.

    • Describe a time you interpreted data to make instructional decisions and ensured a cultural and responsive pedagogy that resulted in student academic achievement.

    • How have you effectively supported diverse populations i.e., special education, English Learners, various specialized student populations, toward meeting higher proficiency levels?
