JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

 A Senior Carpenter assists in overseeing the overall carpentry, plastering, and concrete-finishing operations in a designated Maintenance and Operations area.

 

Some of the core duties will require that a job incumbent:

  • Surveys sites, plans, schedules, inspects, and certifies completion of operations performed by District and contract personnel involving the construction, maintenance, repair, and alteration of facilities.
  • Develops, reviews, and revises work schedules.
  • Confers with supervisors on job requirements, plans, and schedules.
  • Prepares job estimates, scope of work, and sketches of work required.
  • Plans, coordinates, and schedules projects with District personnel, community representatives, contractors, vendors, and the public.
  • Prepares correspondence, reports, instructions, description of tasks, and related documents.
  • Provides emergency responses and related services to minimize safety hazards to students, employees, and the public.
  • Orients work crews in the proper and safe use of tools, equipment, and materials, and implements safe work practices.
  • Provides work direction to craft personnel.
  • Obtains contracts from private vendors and interacts with, coordinates, and inspects the work of contractors.
  • Identifies and evaluates equipment, supplies, techniques, and systems.
  • Ensures compliance with procurement procedures.
  • Coordinates resolution of construction project issues in accordance with District policy, applicable laws and regulations.
  • Performs journey-level duties as needed.
  • May act in place of the supervisor during absences.
  • Enters work order and requisition data utilizing computer systems.
  • Applies provisions of collective bargaining agreements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

PROMOTIONAL STATUS IS REQUIRED. A promotional candidate is a current or retired LAUSD employee who has attained permanent status in the Classified Service by completing the required probationary period in a job classification, or who holds permanent status in the Certificated Service, or an LAUSD employee who has been laid-off within the past 39 months from a regular, permanent LAUSD position in which they passed probation. Laid-off employees' eligibility as a promotional candidate expires at the end of their 39 month period; as such, laid-off employees applying for promotional career opportunities may not be eligible to complete the assessment process or may be removed from the employment eligibility list once their eligibility as a promotional candidate expires.

 

Permanent status in the Classified Service is generally achieved after 130 days of paid service, except for executive, administrative, or peace-officer classes, where the probationary period is 260 days of paid service or one year, whichever is longer. A former employee who is not reinstated, but is appointed from an eligibility list must serve a probationary period in the same manner as a new employee.

 

Education: Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.

 

Experience: One year of experience as a Los Angeles Unified School District Carpenter or Plasterer and Concrete Finisher. 
 
 
Special: A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle. 
 
 
Special Physical Requirements:
  • Manual dexterity and strength to use tools of the trade
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, climb, reach overhead, crouch, kneel, balance, push, pull, and safely lift up to 100 pounds in inspecting or assisting projects when needed
  • Ability to work safely at heights including the use of ladders, scaffolds and other related equipment
  • Ability to work safely in confined spaces

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of:

  • Principles of organization and personnel management
  • Pertinent employee health and safety laws, regulations, and District policies and procedures
  • Pertinent provisions of labor contracts
  • City, County, State, Federal, and other codes pertinent to carpentry, plastering, and concrete work
  • Practices, processes, materials, and tools used in construction, maintenance, and repair by carpenters, plasterers, and concrete finishers
  • Form work, rough framing, roof framing, construction of stairs, finish carpentry, cabinet work, drywall installation, interior plastering, exterior plastering, block wall construction and concrete finishing
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

 

Further, the ideal candidate will also possess the ability to effectively:

  • Interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and sketches
  • Follow written and oral instructions
  • Work effectively with others
  • Use and operate a computer, tablet, or other computing device
  • Identify and troubleshoot malfunctions of heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment
  • Operate electronic testing equipment such as meters, electronic scales, and related heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score. Hiring departments may make job offers to candidates on the top three ranks of the hiring list. Eligibility typically lasts for 12 months.
