JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The following are some of the key duties a School Safety Officer typically performs:

  • Guards a school or other District property and protects property and staff by making prescribed rounds of inspection.
  • Prevents entry or reports the presence of unauthorized persons on grounds or in buildings who are in violation of laws and ordinances affecting the District.
  • Remains alert for and reports fire hazards and combustible and waste materials, extinguishes small blazes, and identifies non-working alarms.
  • Investigates unusual conditions, notifies proper persons or agencies, and takes immediate emergency action when leaks or malfunctions in plumbing, electrical, heating, or other equipment are detected to reduce danger and prevent possible damage.
  • Prepares incident and other miscellaneous reports about crimes against District property and offenses against District personnel or students.
  • May give information to the public entering or leaving District premises.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Six (6) months of experience as a guard or peace officer is preferable.
  • Courses in criminal justice or police administration are preferable.

 

SPECIAL:

  • A valid California Driver License.
  • Appointment is subject to fingerprinting, a review of conviction record, and a thorough background investigation.
  • Completion of a State-approved School Security Certificate Program is required by the end of the probationary period.

 

SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Walk and stand for the assigned period.
  • Normal hearing in normal voice-range frequencies.
  • Agility and strength to protect self from attack.

 

SPECIAL NOTE:

  • Some School Safety Officer positions require working at night.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate is able to understand and enforce District safety rules and procedures to prevent violations or unsafe activities. They must have the ability to work in emergencies and handle stressful events with a high degree of professionalism. We are looking for a candidate who makes sound judgments and decisions and has the ability to recall detailed information under pressure. Additionally, they will be skillful at organizing and managing one’s priorities in order to respond to tasks with efficiency and accountability. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, in order to provide information pertaining to crimes against District property and offenses against District personnel or students, and the ability to successfully build and maintain strong relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders including District staff, government agencies, students, and the public.

EMPLOYMENT SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process for School Safety Officer will consist of a Written Test, a Writing Project, and an Oral Interview. Those who are successful on all parts will then undergo a comprehensive background investigation and a polygraph examination.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment scores.
