JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
A Principal Clerk supervises and participates in one or more clerical processes of an administrative unit or is responsible, under general direction, for a highly specialized clerical activity.
A Principal Clerk:

Plans, organizes, supervises, and participates in a variety of clerical activities or processes.

Maintains control of special funds and expenditures according to well-defined laws, rules, and directives.
-
Acts as clerical supervisor for a unit and is responsible for office management functions.
-
Performs or assists in an evaluation and selection of appropriate materials and processes necessary to complete specific jobs that may be highly technical in nature.

Supervises and assigns the work of subordinates and takes appropriate action regarding personnel matters such as discipline, morale, performance ratings, and vacation approvals.

Interprets established rules, procedures, and policies, and applies them to specific cases.
-
Arranges for meetings of committees or for conferences and records their decisions as a basis for further action.

Plans methods of filing and develops forms and clerical procedures for an administrative unit.

May represent the section or branch in contacts with the representatives of private firms, other public jurisdictions, organizations, and the general public regarding the special work of the unit.

May supervise distribution and inspection of circulating instructional materials and publications.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
PROMOTIONAL STATUS IS REQUIRED
You must be a current or retired employee of LAUSD with 130 paid days in regular status in the Classified Service or permanent status in the Certificated Service or have been laid-off within the past 39 months from a regular, permanent LAUSD position in which you passed probation.
Laid-off employees' eligibility as a promotional candidate expires at the end of their 39 month period; as such, laid-off employees applying for promotional career opportunities may not be eligible to complete the assessment process or may be removed from the employment eligibility list once their eligibility as a promotional candidate expires.
EDUCATION
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency, preferably supplemented by courses in office management, supervision, and human relations.
EXPERIENCE
Three years of clerical experience, preferably including supervisory responsibilities.
SPECIAL
Appointment to positions in the School Police Department is subject to fingerprinting, a review of conviction record, and a background investigation.
A valid California Driver License and use of an automobile may be required in some positions in this class.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Ideal candidates for Principal Clerk will possess the following:

The ability to plan, assign, and direct the work of a clerical staff.

Experience providing clerical support to a unit or an administrator, including supervisory responsibilities.

Knowledge of District organization and functions of various units and branches.

Knowledge of regulations and policies affecting the office business.

Skill with basic Microsoft Office Suite functions.

The ability to understand, interpret, and apply rules, policies, and regulations
EMPLOYMENT SELECTION PROCESS
The employment selection process for Principal Clerk may consist of a computerized multiple choice assessment, a writing project, and a technical interview.
TESTING PROCESS
-
The computerized multiple choice assessment will assess your proficiency in LAUSD personnel policies and procedures, English usage, grammar, and punctuation.

You will be invited to take these assessments online and testing will be conducted remotely and all applications will be required to submit a Candidate Confidentiality Form prior to testing. Failure to submit these forms before the given deadline will result in the withdrawal of your application from the selection process.

Your test scores from these assessments will be banked and used for final calculation.

You must receive PASSING SCORES on all TEST MODULES, for all the assessments, to remain in the selection process.

Candidates who receive a failing score on any test module will NOT be eligible to move forward in the selection process.

The technical interview, which you will be completing as part of the application process, will be worth 100% of a candidate's overall score and will be used to rank order candidates on the resulting eligibility list. The writing project will be evaluated in conjunction with your interview.

If you are successful on all the assessments and meet the minimum education and experience requirement, you will be added to the eligibility list provided you submit the High School diploma when requested during the recruitment process.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score.
