The Los Angeles Unified School District seeks an outstanding Principal to partner with and support the students, staff, and community at Melrose Avenue Elementary Math/Science/Technology Magnet towards achieving academic success for all students.
Melrose Math Science Technology Magnet School serves 420 K-5 students from diverse backgrounds. There are 22 different languages spoken on campus. The student body consists of 32.6% Asian, 1.2% Filipino, 26% White, 23.6% Latinx, 5.5% African-American and 11.1% two or more races; 46% of students qualify for free or reduced meals, 22% of students are receiving IEP services, and 11% are English Learners.
Melrose has received awards and acknowledgements including being named a 2020 California Distinguished School, received a Magnet School of America award, recognized as a LAUSD STEAM certified school, and is known for their Moviemaking challenges, arts programs, and project based learning curriculum. The school is located at 741 N Detroit Street, Los Angeles, CA 90046.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The Ideal Candidate will be an innovative, empathetic and inclusive leader with the ability to partner with staff and the active parent community. Melrose is looking for a leader who has had experience with project based learning and can model and lead the effective use of technology to enhance collaboration, communication, and instruction. The ideal candidate will lead all stakeholders towards increased student outcomes; have strong skills in leading instructional programs; guide teachers in implementing NGSS, writers workshop, and a culturally relevant curriculum; possess strong planning, organizational skills, and creative problem solving abilities; be an effective communicator with strong listening and interpersonal skills; and be an architect of change by modeling and encouraging effective practices.
SALARY:
SALARY: 40G - E Basis ($123,618 - $153,961) – 234 paid days
- For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
- For an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
- Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING):
- Eight years of successful full-time public school district certificated service
- A minimum of three years of experience as a teacher in a K-12 program
- A minimum of two years of experience in an elementary school
- Two years of service in a position that required and utilized an administrative credential, such as assistant principal or equivalent position
Employees who have been issued a below standard Performance Evaluation, or Notice of Unsatisfactory Act(s) and/or Suspension shall be ineligible for application to any promotion process for one calendar year following the issuance of such a Notice

- A valid California teaching credential requiring a Bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching
- A valid California Administrative Services Credential • Multicultural coursework*
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university • District Master Plan requirements*

For all school based administrative positions, candidates must be in the appropriate LAUSD eligible pool for the position or currently serving in the class for which they are applying. In order to be placed in the eligible pool, candidates must successfully complete the appropriate LAUSD Aspiring Administrator Program. Qualified applicants not in an eligible pool from within or outside LAUSD may be considered if fewer than five applicants from the eligible pool apply for the position.
