The Los Angeles Unified School District is seeking an exceptional and visionary Principal to lead Marquez Charter Elementary School to continued instructional growth and to oversee the transition to an interim campus, while also contributing to the long-term planning and development of the permanent school facility.
Prior to the recent Palisades fire, Marquez Charter Elementary was located in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. Marquez is one of the five elementary schools that, along with a middle school, constitute the Palisades Charter School Complex. Marquez has existed as a district-affiliated charter school and has operated under the auspices of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) since the original charter for the complex was granted in 1994. Marquez Charter continues to maintain its status as a high performing LAUSD elementary school and is currently co-located with Nora Sterry Elementary while an interim and permanent campus is rebuilt at the original school location. Prior to the Palisades fire, Marquez served approximately 350 students which includes 5.5% Asian, 3.8% African American, 12.6% Hispanic, and 78.1% White. Of this population, 3.7% are Limited English Proficient, 12.24% are in Special Education, and 13.0% are economically disadvantaged, including foster youth. In addition, Marquez provides Special Education services to students in general education classes. Marquez Charter students continue to achieve above-average scores in math and English Language Arts on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Marquez Charter was one of the first elementary schools to be recognized as an Apple Distinguished School and continues to be at the forefront of integrating digital technology into their instructional programs, providing adaptive learning to meet the needs of a diverse student body. Marquez Charter has a supportive and active parent group and offers extensive enrichment opportunities for all students including an award-winning robotics program.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
will have the ability to work as a dynamic instructional leader to create a cohesive, collaborative, and equitable working and learning environment where all educational partners can openly share ideas, communicate their needs and expectations, and be part of the decision-making process; a background in social emotional supports for students and staff to ensure success; experience in planning, designing and implementing differentiated professional development; experience, knowledge, and proficiency regarding learning differences and differentiation of instruction with the ability to lead the staff in the effective use of data to inform instruction; knowledge and experience working with school budgets, school operations, and instructional/technology platforms (Schoology, Focus, i-Ready, Amplify); skills in fostering relationships and nurturing the development of a positive school culture/climate; and strong organizational and problem solving skills.
SALARY:
SALARY: 41G - E Basis ($126,504 - $157,802) – 234 paid days
- For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
- For an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
- Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING):
- Eight years of successful full-time public school district certificated service
- A minimum of three years of experience as a teacher in a K-12 program
- A minimum of two years of experience in an elementary school
- Two years of service in a position that required and utilized an administrative credential, such as assistant principal or equivalent position
Employees who have been issued a below standard Performance Evaluation, or Notice of Unsatisfactory Act(s) and/or Suspension shall be ineligible for application to any promotion process for one calendar year following the issuance of such a Notice.

- A valid California teaching credential requiring a Bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching
- A valid California Administrative Services Credential • Multicultural coursework*
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university • District Master Plan requirements*

For all school based administrative positions, candidates must be in the appropriate LAUSD eligible pool for the position or currently serving in the class for which they are applying. In order to be placed in the eligible pool, candidates must successfully complete the appropriate LAUSD Aspiring Administrator Program. Qualified applicants not in an eligible pool from within or outside LAUSD may be considered if fewer than five applicants from the eligible pool apply for the position.
