Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Middle School serves approximately 448 students in grades 6 through 8. The student population comprises 78% Hispanic students, 18% African American students, and 4% from other racial and ethnic groups. Nearly all students (97.57%) are economically disadvantaged. Key subgroups include 30% English Learners, 24.4% Students with Disabilities, 7.8% Gifted and Talented, 7.6% Foster Youth, and 33% Reclassified Fluent English Proficient. Students face economic conditions that are often less favorable than those of the broader, gentrifying Mid-City community where the school is located.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
will be a transformational instructional leader who builds staff capacity through effective communication and distributed leadership, creating a cohesive, collaborative, and equitable working and learning environment where all educational partners can openly share ideas, communicate their needs and expectations, and be part of the decision‑making process; will have experience in planning, designing, and implementing differentiated professional development and PDSA cycles; the ability to make formal, public presentations to various partners; a background with social‐emotional support for students; experience, knowledge, and proficiency regarding learning differences and differentiation of instruction with the ability to lead the staff in the effective use of data to inform instruction; have knowledge and experience working with school budgets, school operations, and instructional/technology platforms (Schoology, Focus, i‑Ready); foster relationships and nurture the development of a positive school culture/climate; have strong organizational skills and problem‑solving abilities; will also have direct experience with the work of the Educational Transformation Office (ETO)—leveraging its structures, resources, and supports to drive site-wide improvement in priority schools ; and experience implementing or supporting the Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP), applying culturally responsive strategies and equity-focused resource allocation to close opportunity gaps for Black learners.
SALARY:
Salary: MST 44G - E Basis ($137,393 - $171,333) – 234 paid days
- For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
- For an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
- Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING):
- Eight years of successful full-time public school certificated service
- Three years of experience as a teacher in a K-12 public school program
- Two years of experience at a middle or senior high school
- Two years of service in an administrative or supervisory position utilizing an administrative credential, such as assistant principal or equivalent position
Employees who have been issued a below-standard Performance Evaluation, or Notice of Unsatisfactory Act(s) and/or Suspension, shall be ineligible for application to any promotion process for one calendar year following the issuance of such a Notice.

- A valid California teaching credential requiring a Bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching
- A valid California Administrative Services Credential • Multicultural coursework*
- Master’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university • District Master Plan requirements*

For all school based administrative positions, candidates must be in the appropriate LAUSD eligible pool for the position or currently serving in the class for which they are applying. In order to be placed in the eligible pool, candidates must successfully complete the appropriate LAUSD Aspiring Administrator Program. Qualified applicants not in an eligible pool from within or outside LAUSD may be considered if fewer than five applicants from the eligible pool apply for the position.
