LAUSD's Special Education Division is currently seeking well-qualified candidates to fill Instructional Aide for Students Who Are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing position(s) throughout the District.
The Special Education Division's mission is to provide leadership, guidance, and support to the school community in order to maximize learning for all students within an inclusive environment so that each student will contribute to and benefit from our diverse society. The Deaf Education Program serves eligible students with documented hearing differences that may impact their language, communication skills, and access to the core curriculum. Services are provided to students from ages 3 to 22 in Itinerant or Deaf Education Special Day Classes.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
An Instructional Aide for Students Who Are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing assists students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing through the use of sign language or oral communication methods by presenting educational materials and exercises related to classroom instruction.
Typical duties include:
- Assists students with limited language abilities in developing communication skills such as sign language, speech reading and English.
- Assists a teacher or other certificated employee in a school by presenting educational materials and exercises related to classroom instruction.
- Assists to remove academic, linguistic, and social-emotional achievement barriers by repeating, rephrasing, modifying to student’s preferred communication modality, or utilizing supporting materials to assist student engagement in formal and informal learning environments.
- Tutors in academic, vocational, and related subjects.
- Assists and instructs students in the use of books, materials, equipment and adaptive devices.
- Assists in adapting training aids and classroom equipment for use by students.
- Operates audio-visual equipment and uses other materials and methods to present educational material to students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for the position of Instructional Aide for Students Who Are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing will possess a deep understanding of both the academic and personal needs of students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Above all, they will be patient, empathetic, and dedicated to supporting the success of students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, helping them to thrive both academically and socially.
This candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of communication systems for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, be well-versed in basic academic subjects such as English, Math, History, and Science, and understand the unique needs and challenges faced by these students. The candidate will be familiar with adaptive devices and resources, such as hearing aids and captioning services, to support student learning. Additionally, they will have experience with audio-visual equipment used in instructional settings, ensuring all students have access to effective learning tools.
The ideal candidate will possess the ability to communicate fluently in the manual or oral communication system that best meets the needs of the students. They will effectively convey concepts to students using a variety of instructional techniques tailored to accommodate the students' language abilities and preferred communication modes. They will actively promote awareness of the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Special Physical Requirements:
Manual dexterity to produce readable sign language through movement of fingers and arms.
Visual acuity to see information communicated (such as sign language and facial expressions).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
In compliance with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 and other related legislation, candidates for this classification must meet the following standards: Paraprofessionals who provide instructional assistance are required to possess a high-school diploma or equivalent and one of the following.
Completion of 48 semester units or 72 quarter units from a recognized college or university;
OR
Possession of an associate or higher degree, from a recognized college or university;
OR
Receipt of a passing score on the District Proficiency Test and the Instructional Assistant Test
EXPERIENCE:
One year of experience as an interpreter, instructional aide, or a special education assistant in an education program for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Eight semester units from a recognized college or university in deaf studies including courses in audiology, speech and language, sign language interpretation, and/or transliteration may be substituted for the required experience.
SPECIAL:
Proficiency in the use of sign language or oral interpretation as appropriate to the class is required.
SPECIAL NOTE:
A Red Cross First Aid Certificate must be obtained within 60 days after appointment and must be kept current.
A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and the use of a motor vehicle, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation may be required for some positions.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score. Hiring departments may make job offers to candidates on the top three ranks of the hiring list. Eligibility typically lasts for 12 months. The hiring list resulting from this assessment process may be used to fill open positions in related job classifications.
