THE POSITION

PROMOTIONAL STATUS IS REQUIRED FOR THIS RECRUITMENT

 

You MUST be a current or retired employee of LAUSD with 130 paid days in regular status in the Classified Service OR permanent status in the Certificated Service OR have been laid-off within the past 39 months from a regular, permanent LAUSD position in which you passed probation. Laid-off employees' eligibility as a promotional candidate expires at the end of their 39-month period; as such, laid-off employees applying for promotional career opportunities may not be eligible to complete the assessment process or may be removed from the employment eligibility list once their eligibility as a promotional candidate expires.

 

At LAUSD, Health Care Assistants assist teachers and nurses by helping in the training and education of disabled students by presenting educational material or exercises and applying approved medical procedures. 

 

The position performs authorized medical procedures for disabled students in addition to performing the duties of a Special Education Assistant. 

 

General supervision is received from a Supervising Special Education Assistant or a certificated administrator.  Technical supervision over special medical procedures is received from a School Nurse.  No supervision is exercised over other employees. 

 

This position is part of the Division of Special Education. Health Care Assistant positions are typically offered for six (6) hours/day and work a “C” Basis work calendar.

 

JOB DUTIES

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Performs or assists the School Nurse with basic nursing care and protocols.  These protocols may  include: catheterization, gastrostomy tube feeding, oral suctioning, ostomy care, tracheostomy suctioning, and other procedures as assigned by the School Nurse. 
  • Performs a variety of activities pertinent to training, disciplining, and tutoring in order to inculcate habits, knowledges, and skills in disabled students.  
  • Presents lessons to a student or group of students and may check accuracy of students' work and present additional assignments as directed by the teacher.  
  • Cleans medical equipment as prescribed by the School Nurse. 
  • May obtain food from kitchen, serve food, and feed students or help them feed themselves.

The ideal candidate for the Health Care Assistant (HCA) position has experience working in various District Special Education programs and grade levels. They are committed to excellent year-round attendance, recognizing the importance of their role and its impact on the educational success of our students.  Additionally, they are:

  • Confident working independently and are able to collaborate with School Nurses as appropriate, understanding that not every school site will have a full-time School Nurse.
  • Committed to following District and professional health protocols, including possessing the required respect, ability, and willingness to execute private and intimate protocols such as catheterization and suctioning.
  • Physically capable and willing to perform the job, possessing the physical dexterity required to perform protocols.
  • Respectful of the boundaries of their role, knowing when to refer to appropriate certificated staff, maintaining professional relationships with families, etc.
  • Resilient, flexible, adaptable, and willing to travel to multiple school sites, as needed.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (EDU/EXP)

EDUCATION: In compliance with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 and other related legislation, candidates for this classification must meet the following standards:

Paraprofessionals who provide instructional assistance are required to possess a high school diploma or equivalent and one of the following:

Completion of 48 semester units or 72 quarter units from a recognized college or university;

OR

Possession of an associate’s or higher degree, from a recognized college or university;

OR

Receipt of a passing score on the District Proficiency Test and the Instructional Assistance Test;

AND

Twelve (12) college semester units or eighteen (18) quarter units in courses such as child growth and development, sociology, psychology, health, education, or courses directly related to the physical care or psychology of the disabled are required.  Additional courses in art, English, history, mathematics, and nursing are preferable. 

 

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of paid experience assisting teachers in providing classroom instruction and in caring for the physical and social needs of students with disabilities.

or

   One (1) year of paid experience in an education program for children with disabilities and current status as a permanent Special Education Assistant.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (SPECIAL)

SPECIAL: 

  1. A Los Angeles Unified School District Food Handler's Certificate must be obtained upon appointment and renewed annually.
  2. ***A First-Aid Certificate ISSUED BY the American Heart Association or American Red Cross must be kept valid during the term of employment.  
  3. ***A CPR Certificate ISSUED BY the American Heart Association or American Red Cross must be kept valid during the term of employment.
  4. Ability to speak a foreign language may be required for some positions.  
  5. Successful completion of the District Health Care Assistant class is required at the time of appointment.
  6. A valid California Driver License and use of an automobile may be required for some positions.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process.
