DEPARTMENT OR SCHOOL SITE

The Master Planning and Demographics Unit supports the Los Angeles Unified School District's mission to educate students through its dedication to the research and analysis utilized in the long-range planning for the optimal utilization of existing schools and determining the need for new school facilities.

The unit provides the following services:

  • Boundary Studies
  • Capacity Adjustment Program
  • District K-12 Open Enrollment Program
  • Electronic Enrollment Forecast Process (E-CAST)
  • Electronic Capacity Assessment Review (E-CAR)
  • School Reconfiguration Process

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

A GIS Specialist II performs advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS) related duties and participates in the design, development, maintenance, and deployment of complex geographical spatial datasets, databases, special map exhibits, software applications, and associated technical documentation.

Additional duties include:

  • Developing, verifying, administering, and modifying complex geographic-spatial datasets, databases, and map exhibits using current ESRI Geographic Information Systems software (ArcGIS Desktop & ArcGIS Pro), related ArcGIS desktop applications, and SQL Server and Oracle database platforms.
  • Conducting geographic data development, verification, management, and quality assurance.
  • Maintaining GIS datasets and databases provided by third-party vendors and outside agencies.
  • Providing technical support to personnel in other governmental agencies in the exchange of shared GIS data.
  • Interacting with appropriate City, County, State and federal agencies to obtain GIS spatial datasets and databases.
  • Responding to inquiries related to District GIS datasets and GIS issues from District personnel.
  • Printing, mounting, and laminating PDF, JPEG, and other digital formats.
  • Attending seminars, workshops, and conferences to identify and evaluate developments and trends related to GIS.
  • Developing documentation related to GIS processes and procedures.
  • Representing the department at meetings with District administrators and public agencies as required

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Geography, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field AND at least three years of experience using current versions of ArcGIS in a GIS or cartographic setting in geography, education, engineering, or urban planning field.

OR

An associate’s degree from a recognized college or university in Geography, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field AND six years of experience using current versions of ArcGIS in a GIS or cartographic setting in geography, education, engineering, or urban planning.

Special:
A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking motivated, detail-oriented, and highly skilled individuals with a robust understanding of advanced GIS principles and software, particularly the ArcGIS suite. The ideal candidate will be adept at designing, developing, and maintaining complex spatial datasets and databases, with a proven ability to perform intricate geoprocessing and cartographic tasks. He or she will possess strong communication skills, and thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments, consistently delivering accurate results under tight deadlines.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score.
