DIRECTOR, PILOT SCHOOL SUPPORT

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, Equitable School Performance Office, The Director, Pilot Schools Support will be responsible for supporting and coaching pilot school teams. The director will ensure that schools receive exemplary support and resources in the area of operations, pilot school accountabilities, and pilot school autonomies. The director will collaborate with all stakeholders, particularly with pilot school principals and region staff to ensure that pilot school autonomies are effectively implemented and aligned with District policies. The director will identify and support focused innovative practices to improve student achievement to attain the District's goals outlined in the Strategic Plan.
PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develops and supports systems and conditions that support innovation in pilot schools
• Develops and implements policies and guidelines to ensure use of pilot school autonomies (staffing, budget, curriculum, instruction, governance, and budget) to improve teaching and learning
• Plans, coordinates, and collaborates with regions and District offices and school sites to provide professional development and build capacity related to pilot school autonomies and accountabilities
• Guides schools in the use of their autonomies to support their schools’ mission and vision
• Acts as a resource to pilot school Governing School Councils (GSCs) in terms of their operation and their responsibility to safeguard and align monetary support to the school’s mission and vision
• Develops partnerships with numerous and diverse internal and external stakeholders to bring resources to pilot schools
• Directs the development of multiple forms of communication about pilot schools’ progress and successes
• Facilitates effective communication with the community, parents, schools, and central office staff regarding pilot schools
• Plans and conducts a series of training sessions for new pilot school teachers, principals, region directors, and parents
• Acts as a liaison to and advises the pilot school steering committee
• Directs, plans, and monitors pilot school quality reviews; trains school staff on the pilot school quality review process
• Leads and supports pilot school WASC accreditation processes
• Trains and coaches teachers, principals, and region directors on how to support pilot schools and their goals
• Provides individual coaching to new pilot school principals
• Leads teachers in the development of the pilot school’s Elect to Work agreement (EWA)
• Works collaboratively with schools and their region directors to develop the pilot school principal’s evaluation process to support the region’s overall goals as well as their schools’ goals
• Oversees pilot schools in meeting the overall goals of the regions and LAUSD while maintaining their rights and autonomies
• Directs and evaluates the performance of subordinate personnel
• Performs other duties as assigned
SALARY:
45G, (School Support Administrator, 0515) – A Basis ($157,448 – $196,350) – 261 paid days
NOTE: This position will close on June 30, 2026.
- In the case of an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
- For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
- Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority-based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.
- This position is deemed certificated under Education Code Section 44065, but may not qualify for "creditable service" under Education Code Section 22119.5 for CalSTRS benefits. However, if the candidate chosen for the position is already a CalSTRS member, he/she can fill out an election form to remain in CalSTRS and thereby obtain CalSTRS credit for this service.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- At least eight (8) years of successful, full-time public school service in a certificated position(s), with no fewer than two (2) years of which must have been in a position(s) requiring the Administrative Services Credential
- A valid California Administrative Services Credential (Out-of-state applicants must qualify for and obtain a California credential prior to selection approval.)
- An earned master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard conferred by a regionally-accredited college or university
- Completion of required Multicultural Education and Master Plan coursework*

Employees who have been issued a below standard Performance Evaluation, or Notice of Unsatisfactory Act(s) and/or Suspension shall be ineligible for application to any promotion process for one calendar year following the issuance of such a Notice.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
• Three years of successful, full-time public school experience as a principal demonstrated by a successful track record of improved student achievement
• Three years of successful, full-time public school service in a non-classroom position(s)
• Experience in coaching school leaders as well as planning and implementing differentiated professional development
• Demonstrated successful experience leading collaborative efforts and multidisciplinary teams, including but not limited to, administrators, staff, parents, students, and community partners to improve student outcomes
• Knowledge of the Pilot School model
• Knowledge of District policies and procedures, organizational structure and functions, the California Education Code, and school operations and safety regulations
• Knowledge of the instructional needs of English learners, Standard English learners, students with disabilities, students identified as gifted and talented, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and students of various languages and cultures
• Leadership skill in facilitating group processes, including consensus building and conflict resolution
• Leadership and management skills in effectively operating and understanding pilot school autonomies (or autonomous schools) and large organization structures
• Interpersonal skills in effectively working and communicating with principals, school staff, students, and parents especially in matters related to pilot school autonomies
• Management skills in resolving crisis, complaints, and controversial situations
• Demonstrated proficiency in written communication and public presentation skills
• Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, linguistic, and disability groups
• Ability and integrity in dealing with confidential matters
• Proficient in using Student Information Systems (e.g., Whole Child 2.0 and MiSiS) and other software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Ability to travel to multiple sites throughout the District
