JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The Charter Schools Director oversees and directs the activities related to the District’s responsibilities over charter schools as required by law.

 

Typical duties for this position include:

  • Directing and providing oversight of charter schools to ensure proper processes and procedures are implemented and followed.
  • Facilitating communications and cooperation among the District, charter schools, the State Department of Education, and other public and private entities.
  • Providing advice and counsel to the Superintendent of Schools, Cabinet/Senior Staff, Board of Education, and related District offices regarding charter school issues.
  • Serving as a liaison to the appropriate District offices regarding instructional and operational initiatives and projects.
  • Overseeing the annual process to provide reasonably equivalent District facilities to charter school students pursuant to Proposition 39 (Education Code Section 47614 et seq) and District Policy.
  • Reviewing charter school petitions/proposals and making recommendations pursuant to legal and policy criteria, and provides information to District Leadership.
  • Overseeing the staff responsible for providing services for charter schools and meeting with staff to identify and resolve problems and review and evaluate methods, and procedures.
  • Representing District Leadership at various meetings and/or conferences regarding issues related to charter schools.
  • Attending and participating in various meetings and stays abreast of trends and legislative issues related to charter schools.
  • Resolving complaints and concerns of teachers, students, and parents that are not resolved at the school level.
  • Establishing and maintaining communication with parents and the community regarding educational matters, community concerns, and school operations related to charter schools; promoting appropriate collaboration among stakeholders and increased accountability for results.
  • Assisting in preparing and administering a budget for Charter Schools Division and maintaining responsibility for its control and administration.
  • Performing related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Education: Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree. An advanced degree is preferred.

 

Experience: Five years of management level experience overseeing programs, schools, or operations that include policy development and implementation. Public sector experience, including related to charter schools, is preferable.

 

Special: A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and the use of a motor vehicle, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

The ideal candidate for the position of Director, Charter Schools, is a forward-thinking, equity-driven educational leader with a strong commitment to student achievement, an understanding of charter school authorizing and oversight, charter school operations and governance, and compliance and accountability within the context of public education. This individual will possess in-depth knowledge of California Charter Schools Act, applicable District policies and procedures for charter schools, and charter-specific federal, state, and local regulations that pertain to charter schools.

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate a working knowledge of current relevant issues in the public education landscape, as well as the ability to analyze various sources of data, research, and educational trends to support high-quality charter school oversight on behalf of the District and public. They will be adept at navigating complex policy environments and leading initiatives that align with District policy, goals, and community expectations.

 

This individual will have experience in leading professional teams to successfully meet expected deliverables; program development and implementation; budget oversight and control; and employee supervision and leadership development, including training, evaluation, and progressive discipline. Strong public relations experience and skills and the ability to communicate effectively—both orally and in writing—with diverse stakeholders are essential.

 

The ideal candidate will be highly organized, capable of managing multiple high-stakes priorities and deliverables within strict timelines. They will be strategic thinkers who thrive in fast-paced, high-pressure environments and demonstrate cultural competency, political acumen, and a demonstrated ability to educational equity and conducting themselves with high professionalism and integrity. The ability to translate policy into practice, resolve conflicts diplomatically, and make impactful public presentations will be critical to success in this role.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process.
