JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

A Counselor Aide assists counselors or credentialed employees with tasks relating to student or youth counseling and guidance services that involve educational and career planning, personal/social development, and
follow-up activities.

 

Typical duties include: 

  • Providing students with information on educational and career opportunities and choices, and referring students who need further assistance to credentialed employees.
  • Providing students with access to college and career information and planning tools and referring students who need further assistance to credentialed employees.
  • Collaborating with school personnel, families, and local community to advocate support for post-secondary education and additional academic services.
  • Assisting with transition activities of neglected and delinquent youth from group homes by providing information on requisite skills in areas of education, employment, and life skills.
  • Discussing problems of attendance and behavior with students and parents and referring them to credentialed staff for specialized assistance.
  • Assisting in school and community programs that identify and work with students who are neglected, delinquent, and potential school dropouts and assisting those who have dropped out of school in finding academic or training programs appropriate to their interests and abilities.
  • Assisting in maintaining reports and student contact logs in areas of career, academic, personal, and social development, attendance, and behavior, including a description of support and intervention referrals provided.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

An Associate Degree or a minimum of 60 units from a recognized college or university, including completion of at least 15 semester units or quarter units equivalent in psychology, sociology, or other courses that include psychological or educational tests and measurements, theory of group dynamics, and/ or career education.

 

EXPERIENCE

Completion of a work-study or internship program in a recognized college or university that provides a minimum of four semester units, or six quarter units of supervised experience in educational and career counseling and guidance for elementary, secondary, continuation, or adult school students.

OR

One year of experience assisting in youth counseling services relating to education and career development, drug abuse prevention, neglected and delinquent programs, or work in tutorial training or tutorial programs.

 

SPECIAL

A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and the use of a motor vehicle, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation.

Some positions may require irregular work hours.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidates for the Counselor Aide position will possess the following: 

 

  • The ability to understand and relate to the problems and concerns of elementary, secondary, and adult students. 
  • The ability to collect, organize, and explain information that is pertinent to educational and career planning and opportunities.
  • The ability to work effectively with students, parents, school personnel, community groups, and the public.
  • The ability to make oral presentations and communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth patterns of students.
  • Knowledge of uses and limitations of standardized individual and group scholastic and achievement tests.
  • Knowledge of educational programs and career opportunities available to secondary, continuation, and adult school students.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems and Office Suite Programs.

EMPLOYMENT SELECTION PROCESS

We anticipate receiving a number of well-qualified applicants for this position; therefore, there will be a competitive process. The hiring departments have requested that we proceed with the selection process in an expeditious and timely manner. To honor this request, we will be adhering to a preplanned employment assessment schedule.

 

The employment selection process for Counselor Aide TENTATIVELY consists of a computerized performance assessments, a scored questionnaire, and other test parts as needed. 

 

TESTING PROCESS

 

  • The computerized performance assessment (Skill Check) will assess your proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Excel. 
  • You will be invited to take these assessments online and testing will be conducted remotely and all applications will be required to submit a Candidate Confidentiality Form prior to testing. Failure to submit these forms before the given deadline will result in the withdrawal of your application from the selection process.
  • Your test scores from these assessments will be banked and used for final calculation.
  • You must receive PASSING SCORES on all TEST MODULES, for all the assessments, to remain in the selection process.
  • Candidates who receive a failing score on any test module will NOT be eligible to move forward in the selection process.

 

Note: If you have existing scores for this assessment that are less than a year old, at the time of final scoring, those scores are valid as well and could be applied as your final score if they are higher. 

  • The scored questionnaire, which you will be completing as part of the application process, will be worth 100% of a candidate's overall score and will be used to rank order candidates on the resulting eligibility list. Therefore, when completing the questionnaire, please make sure you provide detailed responses to all the questions/statements.
  • If you are successful on all the assessments and meet the minimum education and experience requirement, you will be added to the eligibility list provided you submit official education documentation (e.g. official transcripts or diplomas) when requested during the recruitment process.
