DEPARTMENT OR SCHOOL SITE

The Office of Government Relations works to ensure that the Los Angeles Unified School District and the students it serves benefit from local, state, and federal legislation, funding, and regulations, at that the work of these government officials aids in the improvement of teaching and learning. The office advocates for the enactment of policies and budgets that support the advocacy priorities identified by the Board of Education and the Superintendent to promote student achievement.

PROJECT

The Coordinator of Legislative Advocacy coordinates and assists in the analysis of proposed legislation and the formulation of the District’s position on legislation, and assists in advocacy activities at the local, state, and federal levels.

 

This position requires working on-site at the office. Our headquarters is located in downtown Los Angeles, California. The current vacancy is in our Los Angeles office, there might be an opportunity to work in our Sacramento office in the future.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Coordinator of Legislative Advocacy typically performs the following duties:

  • Coordinates, at the direction of the Director of Legislative Affairs and Governmental Relations, the District’s legislative advocacy activities.
  • Assists in the analysis of legislation and formulation of the District’s position on local, state and federal legislation and advocacy efforts.
  • Coordinates and assists in the preparation of updates on legislation and legislative issues pertinent to the District including timely dissemination of information related to new laws to support its implementation.
  • Communicates with District personnel, consultants, and lobbyists to obtain information and analyses concerning the potential impact of proposed legislation on the District and follows up with District staff on the implementation of new laws.
  • Assists in the preparation of necessary provisions and amendments for pending legislation including advocacy materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Prepares statements, data, and reports regarding legislation sponsored, supported, or opposed by the District.
  • Monitors and oversees the progress of special legislative projects.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree, preferably in political science, public policy, and education, or a related field. An advanced degree in education, political science, or law is preferable.

Experience: At least three years of full-time service in a position requiring knowledge of the legislative process, understanding of laws, and contact with government officials.

 

Special: A valid California Driver License and the availability of private transportation, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidates for the Coordinator of Legislative Advocacy will have experience coordinating legislative analysis & advocacy outreach, experience related to public education issues are preferable. They will have a thorough knowledge of the structure, procedures, and rules of state and federal legislative bodies including the knowledge of the basic features of the California State Education Code and other Federal laws, particularly those affecting school programs.

Additionally, they will have experience establishing and maintaining effective relationships with elected officials and staff members, and officials of other governmental agencies and community-based organizations; and the ability to coordinate special projects, lead advocacy campaigns and conduct research and analysis related to legislative proposals.

The demands of the position require exceptional interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to handle multiple important projects concurrently in a fast-paced working environment. Moreover, this positon requires incumbent to exercise good judgment, prioritize workload, and a heartfelt commitment to the job and to improving the educational achievement of and environment for the Districts students.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score.
