CHESTER W. NIMITZ MIDDLE SCHOOL
Principal, Secondary
Chester W. Nimitz Middle School, the proud home of the Seahawks, offers a safe and welcoming environment for students in grades 6–8. Operating on a traditional calendar, the school serves a diverse student body of 1,079 scholars—706 in the comprehensive program and 373 in the STEM Magnet program.
As a Title I school, Nimitz is committed to academic excellence and equity. Instruction is guided by student engagement, cooperative learning, and the development of a growth mindset. The school emphasizes writing across the curriculum and employs structured improvement strategies, including PDSA cycles and instructional walkthroughs. Recent initiatives have focused on aligning writing instruction with SBA expectations, enhancing cross-curricular writing practices, and integrating peer feedback.
Nimitz offers three distinguished academic programs: a comprehensive program, a STEM Magnet, and a well-respected School for Advanced Studies (SAS). The SAS program provides an enriched curriculum across all academic areas, encouraging students to become independent, self-directed learners through technology-integrated projects. Students with exceptional talent in mathematics have the opportunity to complete Accelerated Algebra by the end of eighth grade.
The school is also a schoolwide AVID institution, implementing the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program to prepare students for college readiness. AVID focuses on students in the academic middle, aiming to close the achievement gap by accelerating learning and fostering a college-going culture.
Nimitz's partnership with School2Home strengthens the connection between parents and teachers, supporting efforts to narrow the digital divide and enhance student achievement. This collaboration provides families with affordable internet access and digital literacy training, empowering parents to actively engage in their children's education.
The school's commitment to positive school culture and student-centered leadership has earned it recognition as a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School for two consecutive years. Additionally, Nimitz received the 2024 California PBIS Gold Award and is actively pursuing Platinum PBIS Implementation status.
Parent and community engagement is robust, with 84 active parent volunteers supporting various school initiatives, reflecting the school's dedication to fostering strong partnerships with families and the community.
