DEPARTMENT OR SCHOOL SITE

LAUSD's Transportation Services Division transports approximately 41,000 students daily; it oversees approximately 1,700 bus routes during the traditional school year, and logged a total of 23 million miles transporting LAUSD students in the previous fiscal year. LAUSD's Transportation Services Division also operates five major garage facilities serving approximately 3,400 LAUSD-owned buses, trucks, autos, vans, and power equipment.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

An Automotive Mechanic performs mechanical repairs on automobiles and other light duty gasoline powered, alternative-fueled, and electric-powered equipment and assists in repairing heavy-duty equipment.

 

Typical duties for this position include:

  • Performing journey-level mechanic duties on passenger automobiles, small trucks and buses, and other alternative-fueled, electric-powered, hybrid-powered, and internal-combustion equipment, such as air compressors, forklifts, riding mowers, sweepers, and skiploaders, including:
    • Diagnosing sources of trouble or failure in automotive equipment, including those with electronic components.
    • Grinding valves, replacing piston rings, fitting bearings, aligning rods, repairing clutches, overhauling differentials, balancing wheels, repairing or replacing mufflers and other exhaust system parts, repairing or replacing electronic components, servicing and repairing pollution control devices, removing install engines, and adjusting and repairing transmissions.
    • Adjusting and repairing carburetion, fuel injection and ignition systems, including tuning and timing engines and setting and adjusting voltage regulators, generators, and alternators.
    • Adjusting and repairing steering and suspension systems, replacing brake shoes or pads, and servicing hydraulic brake systems.
    • Lubricating engine and chassis, components, replacing hoses, and performing maintenance inspections.
    • Replacing or repairing locks, seat-adjustment mechanisms, and other components items.
  • Assisting in the mechanical repair of heavy-duty equipment, including diesel-powered trucks and buses, involving air brakes, hydraulic loading systems, and heavy-duty application transmissions.

  • Operating garage equipment, including meters, analyzers, gauges, hydraulic lifts, jacks, grinders, etc.

  • Performing simple electric arc and metal inert gas (MIG) acetylene welding.

  • Road testing vehicles.

  • Cleaning tools, equipment, and the work area.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Four years of experience in the repair of passenger automobiles, buses, or trucks, including at least three of the following: engine, transmission and differential, front suspension, brake, and electrical emission diagnostic equipment OR completion of a two-year program in automotive mechanics from an accredited college, trade, or technical school and two years of the aforementioned experience. Experience as a Power Equipment Mechanic with the Los Angeles Unified School District may substitute the required experience on a year-for-year basis. 

 

SPECIAL:

A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California.

A Class A or B license is preferable.

Must furnish a rollaway tool box and hand tools of the trade up to 1-1/4 inch.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for the Automotive Mechanic position will have completed a formal apprenticeship program, or possess journey-level mechanical experience working on and diagnosing common issues and solutions to repair engines, transmissions and differentials, front suspensions, brakes, electrical, and emission diagnostic equipment for automobiles, light trucks, light buses, and other gasoline, diesel, alternative-fueled, hybrid-powered, electric vehicles. The ideal candidate will be very detail-oriented, with an emphasis on safety while performing mechanical repair and maintenance work. They will be a reliable contributor who can adapt to changes in work demands. Furthermore, they will work together with other garage staff and use effective communication strategies to keep them informed about what repairs have been made on which vehicles, as well as any pending maintenance/repair work that still needs to be completed.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score.
