DEPARTMENT OR SCHOOL SITE
The Project Execution Branch of the Facilities Services Division is responsible for the construction of new schools and repair and modernization of existing schools as part of a multi-year bond funded capital improvement program. The branch is dedicated to ensuring that existing campuses are modernized and repaired in support of the education and safety of our students and staff utilizing cost efficient and sustainable materials. Candidates who are selected for the position of Associate Project Engineer I will receive mentoring and job training in school building construction management from top-level LAUSD project managers. Incumbents will develop a knowledge of LAUSD construction and engineering methods and will be able to perform a range of field and office tasks.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
An Associate Project Engineer I receives on the job training and applies basic knowledge and skills to assist project management staff in analyzing construction engineering issues and ensuring project compliance to District standards. Typical duties include but are not limited to
- Evaluating and analyzing contract documents and as-built drawings for soundness of engineering methods, accuracy of calculations, potential constructability issues, and compliance with applicable requirements and District standards
- Reviewing contractor baseline and monthly progress schedules to identify potential issues during the pre-construction phase
- Providing support during the negotiation of change orders and cost estimates
- Providing support to closeout staff by evaluating closeout documents for accuracy and compliance to Division of the State Architect (DSA) standards
- Inputting and processing project related documentation using project management software.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor's degree*, in architecture; civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, or environmental engineering; or construction management.
Special:
Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate or Construction Manager-in-Training (CMIT) certificate is preferable.
A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle.
*For the purpose of this selection process: Students currently enrolled in the last semester/quarter of a degree program in the stated fields above may be allowed to compete in the employment assessment. If candidates are successful in the employment assessment, their name will be withheld from the eligibility list pending verification of their conferred degree.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will be committed to the field of construction project management and display a willingness to learn established policies, procedures, and methods from others and apply this knowledge in the workplace. He or she will be diligent and detail-oriented in the performance of assigned tasks and will be ready to provide technical assistance to project team members as needed. Possession of a Construction Manager-in-Training certificate is preferred.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment assessment process. Candidates who pass all parts of the assessment process are placed on a hiring (eligibility) list based on their assessment score. Hiring departments may make job offers to candidates on the top three ranks of the hiring list. Eligibility typically lasts for 12 months. The hiring list resulting from this assessment process may be used to fill open positions in related job classifications.
