JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

An Asbestos Surveyor inspects structures and mechanical systems at schools and offices to identify building materials that contain asbestos.

Some of the core duties that job incumbents will perform, may require that he/she:

-Makes regular periodic facilities' inspections to identify asbestos containing building materials.
-Takes samples of building materials for laboratory analysis of asbestos content, puts identifying information on containers, and encapsulates the areas of the materials from which the samples are taken.
-Evaluates the condition of asbestos-containing building materials and recommends that they be repaired, removed, encapsulated, or scheduled for re-inspection.
-Coordinates the obtainment of floor plans, building layouts, and blueprints with the Plot Plan and Allotment Unit, principals, and others; and refers to the drawings when conducting surveys.
-Completes standard forms describing the location and condition of asbestos-containing building materials at surveyed sites.
-Forwards records of surveys, drawings, and reports to the Facilities Environmental Technical Unit staff responsible for Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) compliance oversight.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.

 


EXPERIENCE:
Six months of experience as a Maintenance Worker or one year of experience in the maintenance, construction, or repair of buildings. Successful completion of a State-approved accredited course for Asbestos Building Inspector may be substituted for the required experience.

 

SPECIAL:
Completion of a State-approved accredited course for Asbestos Building Inspector within 6 days following appointment.

A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle.

 

SPECIAL PHYSICAL ERQUIERMENTS:

-Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, reach overhead, crouch, kneel, balance, push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds in inspecting or assisting with projects when needed
-Ability to work safely at heights including the use of ladders, scaffolds, and other related equipment
-Ability to work safely in confined areas such as attics, crawl spaces under buildings with narrow accesses, and utility or pipe tunnels
-Vision sufficient to perform site surveys and assessments
-Normal color-vision to distinguish colors on plans and floor patterns
-Normal sense of smell to detect potentially hazardous situations, such as gas leaks

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal Asbestor Surveyor will possess broad technical skills and good working knowledge of:

-Materials, practices, and tools associated with asbestos identification, sampling, and abatement safety and other regulations pertaining to asbestos inspection.

 

Additionally, we are seeking candidates with a demonstrated ability to:

-Work effectively with others
-Read and understand written instructions
-Read and understand basic information found on blueprints
-Use tact and discretion when answering questions regarding the presence of asbestos at a site
-Work independently and conscientiously
-Write clear and accurate reports
-Operate a computer and associated peripheral devices
